network documentation

Without using a 3rd party software like visio...was wondering how you guys document your network, servers and desktops and what type of information definitely should be there.

just curious for other opinions.

thanks

Basically Visio and Excel.

Found a GREAT little program recently called LANGuard from http://www.gfi.com/languard/

The basic edition is free for personal use and the commercial edition is only $99. You can create incredible reports and html web pages that give you such a clear picture of the network with little or no effort. It is absolutely scary the amount of information it gathers!

or for an added twist (and to check the security of youur network), go here (at the bottom of th page) http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/sqsw/nesn/

This a demo version and is good for running against 5 IP addresses. It'll give you a quick layout of your network and indicate any potential holes
