Sharing dial-up with 98 & XP Pro
I am trying to share a dial up connection between win 98(host) and xp pro(client). I am using two Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Model No. LNE100TX ver5.1. I din't have to use the install disk for xp pro, but i did in the win 98. At first I was able to view shared files. I tried to share the internet connection using these instructions, http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...sharingdup.htm. I got the TCP/IP settings on the 98 comp set up easily. The xp comp was harder to set up but I tried to get it as close as I could. The 98 has 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 as its IP and subnet, the Xp comp has 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is 192.168.0.1. I could ping 127.0.0.1 ; ping localhost ; and I could ping the modem's IP. But when i tried to ping 192.168.0.2, 98 pinging xp, it said something about it timed out. When I tried to ping 192.168.0.1, XP pinging 98, it gave me the same message. Now when i try to access the shared folders on the xp machine I get a message saying i don't have permission to access the folers.
sorry it is so long Any tips on how to fix this? |

Do they have unique names and same workgroup?? I think you should still be able to ping though even if those are not, but I've noticed that the way I logon to or don't logon makes the difference for my 3 PC's. On my win98 laptop it will come up as unaccessable till I actually logon with it!! Hope this may at least point you in a good direction to solve prob!

I'm assuming these computers are connected directly to eachother (not through a hub/switch), are you using a crossover cable?

yes I am using a crossover cable. i have been trying to get this to work for 8.5 hours. Would it be easier to just go buy a hub/switch/router to share this connection. well i am giving up for the day.

As far as I know, a router can't be used with dial-up.

The only "router" I know of off the top of my head that works with dialup is the 3Com 56K Lan Modem (3C886) - and it's $200+. It's an external 56k modem with four 10 megabit hub ports. For what it is, it works very well.
