Unhappy Networking Problem - Any Ideas?

I am networking two computers at home (direct connect with an ethernet cable). Yes, it is the correct cable for direct connect.
One odd thing is happening, and I don't know what to do. Here are the details:

Software: Windows 98 on both computers.

Computer 1 - Has a modem and is used to connect to the internet. When I call up WIndows Explorer, it shows the "Entire Network" and both computers are listed "Computer 1" and "Computer 2". When I double click on "Computer 1" I can see all the directories and printers I have listed as shared. When I double click on "COmputer 2" it says . I also cannot use the computer connected to computer 2. I have Internet connection sharing activated. When I click on the "Microsoft Interet Connection Sharing" icon, it says "No computers are sharing the internet connection."

Computer 2 - It has interconnect connection sharing activated. It CAN get the internet from Computer one. No problems downloading internet stuff. When in WIndows Explorer it CAN get files from Computer 1. All the shared directories show up correctly. When I click on the "Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing" icon, it says "One computer is sharing the internet connection." Computer 2 can also access and print to the printer attached to Computer 1.

I am at a loss to understand why COmputer 2 can see everything on Computer 1. Yet, Computer 1 cannot access the files or printer on Computer 2.

Any ideas on what might be going on? Thanks in advance for the help.

Regards,
Larry

You only install ICS on one computer - the one with the modem or the broadband connection. Uninstall it from the other one and set the TCP/IP properties on its NIC to use DHCP. Install the NetBEUI protocol for sharing files and printers on the LAN if it still won't cooperate.

How do I do that?

Thanks for the advice. How do I set the TCP/IP properties on the NIC to use DHCP? Or install the NetBEUI protocol for sharing files and printers on the LAN if it still won't cooperate.

Thanks,
Larry

DHCP is on the WINS tab. You would set it to obtain IP address automatically and disable DNS.

NetBEUI is installed by adding a protocol.
