PPTP VPN windows 98SE
I'm setting up a PPTP VPN connection and have run into a problem. I was able to authenticate last night after finalizing the configuration on the firewall. Today i've been getting error 658 on the windows 98SE client. It tells me the server failed to respond in a reasonable time. This error message is displayed after 5 seconds of trying. On the corporate side the timeout is set to 60 seconds.
The error message references the client side as the problem. I double checked all configurations and everything was properly set. I went ahead and removed all networking components from network properties. I rebooted and then reinstalled Client for MS, NIC, Dial-up adapter #2, MS VPN Adapter, and the 128bit patch for DUN . I added the VPN connection again via dial-up networking but again got the error message. The connection failed on two laptops both setup the same way. The contstant was AOL as the dial-up ISP used to make the connection. Aside from reinstalling windows and seeing if it's an winsock issue i'm out of ideas. Anyone else experiencing this issue? Thanks |

Scooby;
VPN will not be very productive over dial up anyways, can't you just dial-up direct?? I use it, but have DSL so it is quite an advantage over our coorporate dial up. But if your just wanting to see it work for your own satisfaction, or don"t have dial-up to your coorporate network, then the first thing is to ping the external router. And if reachable a tracert the same can give you an idea of what kind of traveling your doing going thru AOL. Aside from that, would be nice if you had another dial-up connect just to test with so you can narrow it down to AOL or your PC.

I just wanted to test the VPN which is why i'm going via dial-up AOL account.
I'll test it again in the morning with the route. Tried it tonight from home via dsl and w2k and not a problem. thanks for the input |

I don't even think our IT support will help me if I called them and told them I was trying to tunnel in over an AOL dial up, they would just tell me to use dial up. I do know that VPN will work over dial up, but it won"t work well and will be slower than dialing up due to overhead. I can see it saving to company money though because your using your dial up instead of theirs.
