The Journal of Environmental Science and Technology has just published the results of research by Swedish scientists which show that computers and their monitors are emitting chemicals which are causing headaches and skin allergies. A fire retardant chemical used in the plastic is,when warmed up, emitting triphenyl phosphate, a class of organophosphate esters. Even after two years of operation, monitors when switched on and warmed up, are giving out 10 times the normal background level of the chemical.
So it seems, that as well as having a filter screen in front of the monitor to protect our eyes, we should also wear a gas mask to protect our lungs.
