My old Cannon 6000 printer died and I replaced it with a Lexmark USB X63 printer. Despite all attempts I could not get it to share on my network. I went to Lexmark's website and it said "X63 Peer to Peer Networking = No". Is this typical of all USB printers?

Is that an older printer? All that is really needed is a piece of software to emulate the LPT1 port. Most new printers that I've seen come with a protocal to do this. You can even share newer USB scanners.

I didn't know you couldn't share any printer as long as the machine it is installed on has print sharing enabled.

Tuf: Nope - some printers will not work except on the local machine. I have fooled printers to work shared by installing them locally, then moving them back to the other machine, then adding the shared port - but that won't always work.

Thanks I didn't know that. I'd have pulled my hair out. ....LOL
That would preclude putting it on a USB print server as well wouldn't it? Of course the print server costs as much or more than a better quality printer. |

Yep - some cheap USB printers won't even run on a print server.
