Networking XP pro and 98SE (again)
I am having a bit of probs here. I am trying to set up the XP pro machine as host, and have the 98 machine as guest. Now, when I connect the two machines together and set everything up through TCP/IP, XP doesn't recognize the machine at all. And the 98 machine has one computer on network neighborhood, but the computer is itself. I have not figured out why this all is, but I need some help if it is available. XP says the connection is "unplugged." That is not so. Any help is appreciated.

Hi ZeroX5,
If the machines are connected directly to eachother, are you using a Cat5 crossover cable? |

Well yeah
I am using a 25ft. CAT5 cable, but I am not sure what "Crossover"
is. |

There are two types of wiring configurations for Cat5 cables, one is standard (or "patch") and the other is "crossover". You use a patch cable when connecting systems to hubs/switches/routers, and a crossover cable when connecting systems directly to eachother (NIC to NIC).

ah well
So, having the wrong cable is the problem then huh? It would explain why nothing is working. Well, if this is it, thank you for you help.

Yep, not using a crossover cable causes that "unplugged" error you mentioned.
