Boom 2 computers and a serial cable

I have to computers 1 is win98se 2 is 2k pro. I have a serial cable i want to connect the two computers and share the internet connection with the other computer. How do I set up the computers? I've pluged in the cable and went through the wizards on both machines. 98's the host and 2K is the guest, 2K ask for a username and password when i try to connect to the other computer. What am i missing to get this to work?

I'm no expert at dc connections but I think it would matter if you are using a dial up modem or if you are connecting with a nic as to how you would want to do this. Generally you only need/want to run the wizard on one of the computers.
I have only seen this done once using a serial cable and they were using a program called WinRoute(?) I think (it's been awhile). I can tell you it was very slow.

your best bet is to get a nic for each computer and use a crossover cable to connect them.

the serial port will not work without buying a adapter for each computer to convert to nic, the cards is a much better way to go, and a lot cheaper.

You cannot share Internet connections with a serial cable, only transfer files. You need a NIC in each machine and either a crossover cable or 2 straight cables and a hub.

I have seen it done but I'm not saying you can do it with todays hardware. I don't think it is worth doing even if you can. I searched on google for ICS and serial cable and got several sites explaining how to do it. But the directions were vague, although one did list using Win2000.
