Must check your settings under internet options, connections tab, LAN settings. And did the mail ever work?? Is it configured properly for your mail servers???

Is there a hostfile that your using for the name resolution? Sounds like name resolution to me... did you try to telnet to port 80 of www.google.com and get a proper response? If you DID, you might want to check into local network setting in your pc... what os is it?
