wireless networking problem

ok here is the setup i have going. cable modem> d-link router > d-link 1000AP acess point > 2 computers w/ d-link DWL-520 wireless PCI cards.

one computer works fine, but the other cant seem to pick up the settings. it has the little green computer in the taskbar showing it has a connection, but i cant connect to the internet. when i go run>winipcfg, it doesnt have the right settings, like its not even talking to the AP or router to get a ip or gateway or anything. i have tried to release and renew, but no luck. the network is set to optain a ip automatically as a default, and one computer works doing it but the other doesnt. the computer that doesnt work is running Win98, its a old dell P133 w/ 16Mb ram, and they are planning on just using it for internet, so thats all i need to do is get it connected. any ideas on why it wont pick up the settings? could the signal strength be a problem? it is only around 66% to 73%, and i have no idea why, since the computer is in the next room, no more than 30 feet away with only one wall inbetween.

any ideas???

thanks ^dan

The signal appears to be plenty strong. I'm not familar with the D-Link products you are using but it sounds like a configuration problem.
I know for linksys products you could check the settings on the working computer and compare them with what you have on the one that doesn't work.

The old Dell may not have a good enough PCI bus to properly configure the network adapter. I've run into several older machines where this is the case - I had to put ISA cards in. You may have to put an ISA nic in it and hook it to the router with a Cat 5 cable. I would also put some more ram in it - 16 megs is absolute bare minimum for Win98 original and below minimums for Win98se.

Look it up at Crucial by the Dell model number, that's proprietary EDO 72 pin simm ram that must be used in pairs.
