Guys; I'm helping a friend fix his internet; like; whenever he starts his computer; then restarts it; it won't turn the cable modem "pc" light on; he is on roadrunner...; using a usb connection (which I think is the problem).... ANY help would be appreciated.
Thank You |

Hi Lethedethius,
USB cable/DSL modems have always been problematic. If at all possible, contact RR and tell them that you're having too many problems with it and see if they can exchange it for an external ethernet modem (that's what I did). Otherwise, make sure you have the latest drivers for both the modem and USB components of your motherboard (VIA drivers if you have a VIA based mobo) installed. Hope that helps. |

hrmm your smart
ok dood; ummm well basically the idiot that installed the system for RR; hooked it up by USB; but installed a NIC; What a Dork!
I basically plan on just like; asking the owner to buy a linksys 10/100MB NIC; and a nice lil cat5 cord; install it that way =) hrmmm; the owner only has 64MB of SD-RAM; should I install atleast another 64MB Chip or just ask him to buy a 256MB chip? Thanks man. A learning experience haha |

Question
I got another question; why does USB work like that; why can't it do the same as Ethernet...
and... I was wondering; what type of wire do I need to use inbetween the cable modem and the computer? Like I need the specs; and what cat I should use.... |

Hi Lethedethius,
What type of modem is it? If it's a USB-only modem, then you can't connect it directly with a Cat5 cable, you'll need an external ethernet modem (from RR). As for the RAM, I would go up to 128MB or 192MB, I'm guessing it's fairly old since it only has 64MB, so 256MB would be a waste. |

Not old; just...
it's not a bad computer
mine is crappier than it; 700Mhz Celeron... ATI Rage... it's nice... it just needs more ram; and some more hdd... I think 64MB CHIP will hold him over a few years until he feels he needs a new one =-) but thanks; also; modem is both ethernet and USB... compatible... =-) |
