Is there a Minimum length to Cat5 cabeling?

I don’t think so... but someone told me it should at least be a foot.
Doesn’t make sense but I had to ask.

Is there a minimum length to making a straight thru cat 5 cable?

thx!

I have one that is factory made that is less than a foot, but no there is no minum that I ever heard of, except for leaving room to move things a bit.

I have never heard of a minimum but can think of 2 reasons to not go shorter than a foot. 1- Adjustment room. You need to have some slack to move parts around and not crimp the cable. 2 - Crosstalk. I don't KNOW that it's a problem but I can see having a problem with 2 cable ends that close together. Keep in mind that I have no data to back this up. This is just my opinion.

I've got tons of patch panel cables that are about 6" or so and they work just fine. Never had any problems with crimps or crosstalk.

Thanks Cowboy. I never heard of one that short being used and didn't know if there would be any problems. Good to hear from someone who has used them that short.

Well... time to contradict everyone. I have always heard that a minumum lenght is 3 feet. I had shorter cables connecting my hub and router and my cable modem and router, but I was getting issues of the router needed a reset all the time. Sometimes it was fine for days, sometimes it would kick out every 20 minutes. I put on some cables that were 3 feet and all the issues vanished with it. BTW, tested the short cables, they were all fine.
