network addition
I have a home network with 3 pc's, all running win98se.
I just added a 4th that has win2000pro. I can find this new client on the other clients, and on the host, but when I try to access it, I am prompted for a password. Where do I configure this password (I currently cannot access the new host). Also, does anyone know of a win2k networking setup tutorial that will help me add this new client to my network?? I know win98se very well, but am new to win2k.... |

Use the same password you use locally on that PC (the win2000 one), the log on over the network. I have the same setup, and havn't dug in yet to see if I can disable that, but using you same login and password as you do locally will get you in. The places to look would be Network places>properties>LAN>properties OR ControlPanel>Users and Passwords!!

thanks
I went to ControlPanel>Users and Passwords, entered a "new password" and still when I try to login to the 2k machine from the 98se host I get a message that it's the wrong password. |

I remember coming across this once before. I forget how exactly it was solved. Try putting the computer name and user name as the user. For example if your 2k machine was called 2k and the user name was HC then you would type '2k\HC' for the user name. Also, you could try to enable the Guest Account on your 2k machine and login as a guest.

You need to do 2 things - you need to add users to the Win2K user manager corresponding to the usernames and passwords that you use to log into the 98 boxes - and you need to create new shares on the 2K box, as the default shares are system shares, not accessible to users. The other option is to enable the 2K guest account, which is not advisable from a security standpoint.
