Networking 2000 & 98
Im trying to network 2 computers together. One has win2000 Pro and the other has 98se. Im using a crossovercable. I do have them networked together but I can only transfer files with the 2000 machine. When I try to transfer info with the 98 machine I get a password promt.
My question is: how do I give the 98 machine access to the 2000 C drive. I don't know how. I don't know how to set up the permissions for another machine. |

Go to my computer-right click-go to manage and then to Local users and groups. There expand the entry and under USERS right click and choose NEW USER. Enter whatever name you use to log into the win98 machine. If you do not enter a password for the win98 machine then in the USER leave that empty to. Once you have entered that user you should be able to file share form the win98 to the win2k. Basically you are just adding a USER to give the win98 box permission.

edrod, is that possible if the 2000 machine is using NTFS? I don't think FAT can access NTFS.

Yeah,
I think that is a problem so if bosco set it up that way he might have a to do something else. Edrod13 |

I actually ran a LAN comprised of 2000 and 98 machines, one of the things that worked for me was to make the 98 machines power users. Believe me, it was the most finicky LAN I've ever dealt with. We hired techs at the tone of 5k and they couldn't figure it out, three months later I finally had the LAN running. There are some older threads out there on the subject also.

bosco,
The file system has nothing to do with it on a LAN. The machine hosting the file system is doing the reading for the other machines on the LAN. You CAN access NTFS files on an NT/2K host from a Win98 machine. You just need to set the users and permissions correctly. Set up a user account on the 2K machine that exactly matches the user logged on the 98 machine and give that account permission to read the files/folders on the 2K machine. Hope that helps. The Old Man is correct, file system has nothing to do with file sharing, you just have to make sure the correct permissions are set in Win2K since it has many more security settings than Win98.
