Cannot see printer on network (Deskjet 960)
Senario:
Small Office with 8 PC’s: ME 6 machines, 98SE 1 machine, XP Home 1 machine. All PC’s = Fat32 file system. Networked with 8 port N-Way mini switch, 10/100, cat5. File & Printer sharing is enabled and all the PC’s can see each other, share files and printers, EXCEPT the XP machine. The other PC’s can see Explorer/Files, can share, copy, backup etc. BUT cannot see the XP machines printer. (Printer sharing is enabled) Printer: HP Deskjet 960 cxi There is no way that I can get any of the other PC’s to see this printer. What am I doing wrong, as nobody over here can help me. I tried the following: Tried to install the additional drivers for 98/ME on the XP machine. Right click on the specific printer in printers & faxes (sharing is enabled) ticked the box to install the 98/ME drivers and it asks for the driver. Insert my XP Home CD and search. There is no driver on the CD. (tried every folder for about 50 minutes) Used the XP CD as this is what I read in the help files. Now I try something different: Create a temporary folder on my C drive and unzip the latest Win98/ME driver (from HP site) to this folder. Now I try again. Browse to Temp folder where the 98/ME driver is and try the install from there, but get the following message THE FILE “HP_INSTALL” CANNOT BE FOUND. There is nothing wrong with the driver as the same driver is used on another PC in ME. Am I just stupid ? have spend at least 4 hours on this and can’t figure it out. Hoe do I get this printer to show up on the network ???? |

I would go to the HP web site and look for an XP compatible driver for this printer and install that driver. Actually I did find an Xp driver at thier web site. Win 98/Me drivers usually do not work in an XP machine. Xp requires thier own drivers for devices in most cases. Although you will have to use the win98/Me drivers on the other win 98/ME respective computers.

Thanks for replying,
The XP driver is installed on the XP machine and works fine. (latest driver from HP website.) The problem is that the other PC's cannot see the printer over the network and apparently what I have to do is to install a 98/ME driver on the XP machine.(to accomodate other operating systems) |

No, I think you will have to install the printer as a local on the respective computers.

Install it as a local printer on each machine, put it back on the XP box and share it, then add a network port on each of the 9x/ME boxes. It might be easier to put it on a Jet Direct.

GLC,
1. Ok, so I take the printer to each PC that might want to use it, attach it to that PC and install the driver. 2. Share it: What is the reason that while it is already shared it cannot be seen over the network ? 3. Network port: 4. How do I add a network port ? What is Jet Direct ? never heard of it. |

Excuse the ignorance but I have never worked with NT/2000 before so a couple of things is not that clear to me. Have been using XP for the last 6 weeks. (know 95/98/ME inside out)
Printer cannot be seen while shared: is this because there is no driver for it ? or is there some other explanation. Can't be the file system, because on this PC it is fat32. Have just tried sharing a Deskjet 980cxi at my office (on XP PC) and the other 98/ME PC's cannot see it either. |

A Jet Direct is a print server, a little box with one or more parallel ports and a RJ-45 jack. It connects a printer directly into a network alleviating the need for a printer to be dependent on a computer that it's connected to. With 8 PC's this is a far easier way to network a printer and also it can be centrally located for user convenience.

Usually Jet Direct needs a server for networking like netware.

Not true - a Jet Direct works beautifully on a peer-to-peer network. All you need is TCP/IP on all machines and IPX on the machine that is used to admin the thing.

That's whole idea of using the JetDirect, so you don't have to have a printserver.
