trying to print to network printer

Hi, wer're trying to get our printer working on our home network (afterall, isn't that one reason why people network home computers - to share the printer?). We are having problems though. We have a Linux network server, and two machines hooked up to it. One is a Win98SE box, and the other (my wife's) runs either Linux or Win ME. Right now we have the printer hooked up to the Win98SE machine and I can print to it, but my wife can't print from her machine in either Linux or Win ME. In Win ME she can 'see' the network printer, but gets an error message about problems communicating with the printer. We also can't print from the server.

Any ideas???

Printer = HP DeskJet 712C.

Cool

The printer needs to be installed on the ME system also. You should be able to just install it, but sometimes it will have to be physically connected for the install to take place. I have no experience with Linux.

Unfortunately, the 712C is difficult to network due to its pure GDI nature (it has no brains). It's not Linux compatible to the best of my knowledge, and to get it working the way you want, you will have to physically install it on the ME machine and install the software, then move it back to the 98 machine and then add a network port to the ME box.

Speaking for Rudedog (I'm his wife and it's my printer we're dealing with) -

I have had the printer installed on my WinME system and still have the software installed. Moved it to the Win98 box, installed it, it worked fine locally but couldn't print to it from the WinME box. I had it set up as a share on the Win98 machine and set it up as a network printer on the WinME machine - and no go.

It works with no problems in Linux - both as a local printer and as a network printer - but when it was connected to the Linux machine we couldn't print to it from Windows (though I could print to it from the Linux partition of my dual-boot system).

So in a nutshell, I've done all of the things suggested to no avail

Any more ideas?

one last thought

on the ME machine, capture the LPT port and re-direct it to the win 98 machine printer share. in printer properties, make sure the port is set to your LPT port. It seems like the hp printer software sometimes only wants to print locally, so you have to make it think it is printing to the local lpt port. when you print, it sends it to the lpt port but then windows will grab the output and re-direct in to the networked printer.
