Question no connection in network

using a xp computer in a network (linksys router), surfing web, and all of the sudden, no more internet or network connections. evryone else on the network has a connection but i don't. just went into router configurations, and my computer is listed unde the dhcp client table as active. any suggestions? router= linksys befw11s4 v.2. the ip address 169.254.92.144 keeps popping up in ipconfig under autoconfiguration ip address, and i know that is not my ip.

That IP is indicative of the workstation not being able to find the DHCP server. Likely problems are a bad cable, nic, or router port. Try restarting the router first, then a cable swap then a port swap.

i tried switching over to my wireless connection, and i think that might work. gsxdan and i have encountered this problem b4, and it was a bad wire, we just consulted our notes from previous networks, so hopefully, wireless will work. thanks

well, i was wrong, for some reason or another, the wireless nic card (linksys usb) did not work. my mom doesn't want me to do anything with the network right now, bc she can't lose internet (she runs a business). she said don't do anything until this weekend, but i don't have any ideas anyway. does anyone have any, in case i do get a chance to figure it out.

Hi,

Have you tried reinstalling the TCP/IP network protocol? Have you tried switching the cards into a different slot on the motherboard? Have you tried switching cables? Using a different port on the router? HTH

Hobey, did you install anything prior to the network failure? You might try a System Restore to a point before the problem.

yea i tried that, but it dod not work. like i said i tired wireless, but that did not work either. for some reason or another it is picking up my neighbor's wireles, and mine. i am unable to connect to his (no password), and i can't connect to mine. using my laptop, i can connect wireless, but not from the desktop. i am going to go home after school, and try plugging my laptop into the wired connection i have hooked to the desktop, which will rule it a nic problem, or a cord problem. i am guessing cable problem bc i rearranged my room, and i may have bumped a cord, which could have split it. thanx for the help, i appreciae it all.

If you are getting interference from your neighbor's wireless, change channels, you have 11 to choose from with 802.11b.

yea, but my dad doesnn't want me to change anything, he thinks that by changing the wireless, it affects the wired as well, so i can't. i was just going to change the ssid, bc we use the same one as the neighbor, bc that would be just as easy. i am going to wait until this weekend to do anything, bc my parents don't get angry if i modify on the weekend. just an update, tho, i did test tha cable on the laptop, and it works fine (in fact, that is what i am posting on right now), so i think it is my nic now. best buy had a netgear for sale for 5 bucks after rebate, so i bought it, and i will put that in 2morrow. have a lot to work on 2nite, so i don't want to mess with anyhting. thanx for all the help.

You need to show your dad the importance of wireless security.

That's okay......my dad thinks Windows 2000 Server as apposed to Windows 200 0 Pro is the reason we were getting DoS'd heavily a few weeks ago...and he still says the internet has been really slow ever since I put 2k Server on our NAT...(though I put Pro back on)
