% of speed from cable vs cpu ??
Hi,
I want to use a old PC with probably a 250 Mhz cpu, as an additional terminal on a network in a travel agency. The network uses a cable connection to an external reservation system. How much effect will the slowness of the cpu have relative to the other machines which are, lets say, about 700Mhz . ie isn't most of the 'speed' derived from the cable connection ? Thanks ! Chris. |

It will take a little longer to process the information recieved on the network, but you shouldn't notice too much slowdown compared to the other machines, providing it's only running the bare necessities.

it really depends. if the application is relying on the system at the other end to provide the processing power and your system is only displaying the results (as if your desktop is acting only as a terminal), then the WAN connection will have more impact on the performance of the network. If, however, your desktop machine is providing some action other than just display, then the desktop specs will have a greater impact.

Yeah, I guess thats the situation- its just displaying the info.
Well l hope so. I'm going to clean it out and try it. As old Aunty said: The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Cheers! |
