Anti Virus problem
Hey guys, am having problem with Anti Virus programs - have a Intel P4 1.6 Northwood cpu, Asus P4S533 motherboard, MSI GfTi4200 video, using on board sound, 2 Micron PC2700 256 memory (for 512). Boots fine, works fine, surfs internet fast, plays games equally well (occasional freeze but rarely)..my problem is when I try to load Norton Anti Virus 2002 or PC Cillum 2002, I end up getting all sorts of errors on rebooting - corrupt file here, corrupt file there, have to reboot 4 to 5 times not to get an error and games won't play worth a darn..have completely uninstalled anti virus (after a heck of a lot of work) and am running now without any at all. Any know how I can install an AV without these problems?? Am I missing something somewhere?? kinda new at this new build so any help would be appreciated. by the way most of the areas have to do with runonce.dil, NAV something, and rundil32 errors...

Most MB's have a built in virus protect in the BIOS settings. Did you make sure to disable that? I've never tried installing another anti virus with that enable, but it might cause serious issues.

Yes you must have the BIOS anit-virus disabled before trying to install Norton or anyother AV program.
Before you try again, be sure and remove any folders and references to Norton from the C drive and the Registry. For the registry get a copy of regcleaner from www.jv16.org |

Thanks, guys. Found the virus check at Boot up in Bios..it was enabled..will disable and try one more time...had to reformat and load ME again to get rid of Norton AV - went in and cleaned PC Cillium from everywhere...kinda hesitant about trying Norton again but can reload everything if necessary one more time..everything running so good without it...but --- Thanks again.
- am learning and will get on track eventually

Try AVG from grisoft.com - it's free, effective, and has a small footprint. I prefer Norton, but there are systems where Norton just doesn't run well (like yours) and AVG is a solid alternative.

New question
Guys, found and disabled the Boot up Virus scan in Bios..Norton seemed to work fairly well but now am getting messages could not find this dill etc. saying file seems to be corrupted, reload..i can reboot and the next time this message does not appear and everything seems fine .. do i just need to reboot til it recognizes everything or do i have a corrupted file that needs attention?? wouldn't i get the same message on the second reboot?? may have to go with glc's suggestion on AVG..thanks for your help

If you are having consistent problems like this with a new build, that tips me off that you might have a hardware issue. You might have flaky ram or a flaky motherboard - or some bios settings that aren't right - or something like that. ME can also do weird things, if it works well, it works well, but if it's not, it will drive you crazy.

only after anti virus
glc, would probably agree and swap out one of my memory and run on 256, but only gives these problems after i install Norton anti virus. As i said earlier, i get this corrupted file message, but can reboot and next time get a good setup with no messages and everything seems to work fine. My concern is do i have corrupted files that needs attention or since i get nothing on reboot can i just ignore it. I can live with rebooting every now and then as long as the system is all right..otherwise, i will reformat, reload and use AVG and try it. Appreciate your time

still problems
glc, have reformated and loaded Me OS again. Downloaded all updates from MS, loaded my games, etc. tried putting in PC Cillum AV - started getting error in dils on reboot and IE not working, Yahoo Pager not working, etc in those horrible little gray boxes...removed Av and system works beartifully. Have tried Norton, PC Cillum, and i guess will try AVG next. My question is could it be a memory chip or other hardware causing it or just good old Me not cooperating..all my BIOS looks right ... checked with another friend who has pretty much same build but running 98SE in his. Hate to keep bothering but am kinda lost here. would like an Av program but not sure which way to go now

Well, this is my personal opinion - and there are many who will disagree with me - but I think ME is a terrible operating system, the absolute worst effort Microsoft has made since DOS 4.0. Take that at face value, don't read anything into it.
If I were in your shoes, I would go back to 98SE or put Win2000 Pro on - or maybe even XP (which I don't like either). If you must use ME, it's becoming obvious that the 2 antivirus packages you have tried don't work right, time to try another. Just don't go near McAfee, it destabilizes GOOD versions of Windows. |
