dial-up and networking?
if i install juno platinum on two different pc's running w/98 se
using the same tel. no. with both work for internet access simutaneously ? or will there be collisions? i gave up dial-up conn. long ago; i am trying to help a friend with this decision. thankx hjm |

No sorry, you will only be able to use on or the other to connect to the internet, you need a proxy server to share the connection the easiest one that I have used is found here, along with alot of other tools.

The reason it won't work is that when the first PC establishes a connection, the second PC's modem will get a busy signal.
You will have to do as MikeL suggested. Network the two and get some form of proxy server. Chas

If he has a separate line on each PC, why couldn't he dial into his ISP from each of the PC's at the same time. Apologize if I didn't properly understand the question!

He can't dial in from two telephone lines at the same time because the second call would be rejected by the ISP. Had exactly the same problem some months ago, when I had to use dial up from the office. My daughter was on the same dial up account via the home network. Dialed up from the office and the connection was rejected. Called the ISP and he issued me a temporary account id and password. I have a very understanding ISP.

Your right I forgot about logging in, and even though he could connect if each PC has a serarate line he probably couldn't get logged in with the same user ID and password simultaneously. Although I think I did it once when I had prodigy dial-up and it let me in there on 2 pc's with the same account.

Most ISP's will only allow one unique username/password logged in at one time.
You will either need a proxy as suggested above, or a second account. |

I kind of thought he meant both pc's dialing into the same number, as I figured most anyone would know that if a phone line is in use by 1 device, one can not place a second call from another device on that same line!

It all depends on the ISP's setup. At work my dial-ins all use the same phone number, account and password. Some ISPs have safeguards against this, and some don't. My old ISP would usually just email you if you repeatedly had multiple connections on the same account to see what was up.
You're dialing the same number, but it's rolling over on the ISP end to the next available line. As long as you have multiple out-going lines, you can keep dialing out to the same number. |
