Two XP machines no hub

Just built a new machine, trying to get a net connection from my main machine. I have 2 nics in the main machine, one hooked up to the cable modem the other nic hooked up with the new machine with a crossover cable. I used the network wizard and it didn't work. I cannot share files or internet. Question: On the main machine should the ICS be turned on the connection that is hooked up to the cable modem, or turn the iCS on the connection hooked up to the new machine. I turned file and print sharing on and nothing seems to be working. I am lost, any help would be appreciated.

Check the TCP/IP properties of the LAN NICs on both machines to make sure they're on the same subnet. They should be something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If that looks good, go to a command prompt and try to ping the other PC. That will let you know if you are "seeing" the other PC at all...

Check the computer properties to make sure both are in the same workgroup also.

I think Motorola makes a sufboard cable modem with a usb and a NIC port and they have them connecet via an internal bridge so if you had two IP ADDRESSES both could use the cable modem.
