Question About A Home Network

here's a quick thing I need to get straight first, basically to make a home network is get a router and connect them all to it right?

now on to my real question, when I make a home network and I want to transfer files between computers, does it take bandwith away from the internet since it's a local connection?

Cool

No, with the router it is like a direct connection between the PC's.
