basic networking question

I have a basic networking question. I am setting up a new computer for my church youthgroup next week, and I wanted to transfer some files from my computer to the new computer. My question is this. My mobo has onboard lan, and I have a NIC that I can put in the other computer. Can I just install the NIC and use the crossover cable? Also what else would be involved in setting this up. I believe my mobo is a Biostar MK7VQ but im not exactly positive. BTW one computer is running win98se and the other will be running xp home.

Yup... run a crossover cable, put them on the same workgroup... give them separate IP's and away you go.

You could also pull the hard drive and slave it in and grab the files.
