PC + MAC + Router + File Sharing??

We built a PC for a friend (98SE) who also has a Mac. He wants to share a broadband connection with both so I assume a Router will get the job done, ie, just plug the PC and the Mac into the Router and both can surf the web. Correct?

But what about file sharing between the Mac and the PC? At the office, we purchased a program called DAVE that allows you to hang a Mac on an NT network. But for home use, is there something else available??

Yes a router will work fine, and contrary to popular belief you dont have to use the Airport. Any router will work. My macs are wireless so i use a linksys wireless router.

As for file sharing does he use os-x, if so then it has somba built in. Go to preferences, sharing, and turn on "windows file sharing". No need to use Dave with OS-X, just delete the program. If OS-9, then stick with Dave.

Thanks OEM,
I'm not sure what OS he's running on the Mac, but if he has OS X it looks like he's all set. If not, Thursby also has a program called MacSOHO $50, here: http://www.thursby.com/products/macsoho.html

and it's cheaper than DAVE ($150)and looks like it will accomplish what he wants.

Thanks for the reassurance on the router too.

If he is using OS-9 I would still recomend Dave, but at $150 a better bet would be to spend the $120 for OS-X, upgrade from OS-9 and get all of the newer OS features and speed in addition to the built in Samba. Or for $200 he could buy a 5 licence family pack of OS-X if he has more than 1 Mac.

oem,
I get your point about DAVE, but wouldn't MacSOHO serve his needs for 100 bucks less?

It may. Problem with MacSoho is it is non routable and does not allow printer sharing. If this is not an issue then it should work fine. If he needs print sharing then you're looking at $150 for Dave or $120 for OS-X.

oem,
Update: I just found out he does in fact have OS X, so he should be all set for sharing files.

In system preferences, open the sharing pane, and turn on windows file sharing. then at the finder (desktop) use apple+k to mount the share either by browsing or IP address.
