I gave her an old P1 (i had the parts for it lying around) win 98SE in case it matters but now i want to connect it to the net. none of the roommates that have internet are there right now so i do not have access to anny of their computers. is there a way to find out what the settings to this router are???? and what settings do i need?? ip adress?? subnet mask??? dns server??? gateway??? |

That might very well assign it automatically. For now, try connecting your computer to the network and see if you get the Internet. As for all the options on the network [printing, sharing files], the network operating system used may require other software to be installed on the friend's PC ... perhaps a client. So for now, just see if it goes to the Internet.

Once you plug your computer into the router and you configure your computer for network environment, you should be able to connect to the Internet. If you want to know what the address for the router is, go to command shell and type 'ipconfig'. I'm not sure if that command is available only for 2000/XP, so for win98, it might be 'winipcfg'. The router's address is equal to the gateway. The IP address that you will see will be your computer's local IP address.

Like bonzai said, just plug your computer into the network, and you could even run the Internet Connection Wizard and it will configure the machine for a LAN connection to the net. Try that and see if it works.

With Win98se, all you should have to do is open the TCP/IP properties of the NIC, go to the WINS tab, and tell it to use DHCP. NO other settings need to be made if the router is set up as a DHCP server (most are by default).
