Hello again,

I went into Control Panel / Network Connections and highlighted and deleted the unnecessary connections for both machines. Does this give me a clean start to do a manual setup? If so, where do I need to start a manual setup?

Thanks again.

Delete ALL the connections - then create a new connection.

All connections are now deleted, but I still see more than one internet adapter for the first machine and the second one shows an internet adapter and also a firewire connection?

Do I create a new connection in the same area where the connections appear? If so, which is the corrrect option to create a connection manually? If I choose "create a new connection" it brings up a wizard.

Thanks again for your help GLC.

I'm going to have to defer to someone who has worked more with XP than I have - I personally would find a way to bypass the wizard. It needs to be as simple as possible, no connection sharing, no bridges, etc.

The desired end result is a local area connection using your NIC with:

Client for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IP
File and print sharing

with the default TCP/IP properties - obtain IP addresses automatically and DHCP enabled.

Both machines need to be in the same workgroup but with different names. I would disable the builtin XP firewall to ensure no problems with filesharing.

You can do it from the new connection wizard, it's different from the network connection wizard. It will only set up that particular connection and will have no bearing on the rest of the network.

Personally I would run the network wizard because I'm familar with it and it works well for me. But there may be a better way to do it. I would just clean out the network connection folders on both computers, run the wizard on one computer, make the disk when it asks, and the run the disk you made on the other computer.

That always works well for me. If you want to add NetBeui you'll have to add it manually XP doesn't offer it by default but it will support it. I don't use it anymore, but when all else fails it will usually work like a champ.

Don't worry about the firewire connection, if you are not using it you can disable it but it doesn't really matter.

Hey Tuff,

I have been playing around with this all afternoon and finally got it going using the new connection wizard like you suggest.

For some reason when I went to look at connections I was seeing a 1394 connection and that was what the wizard was trying to bridge with the adapter. Anyway I found an option to uninstall it from the network and it is gone now.

I have everything working, file sharing works too! I really needed that even more than internet connection sharing.

I guess I should try to document the steps I went through but for right now I just enjoy seeing it working.

Thanks again to all who helped. This is really a great site! This past weekend I got my satellite dish fixed and Pc's networked with lots of help and advice.

Great glad it worked. It's always a good idea to write it down if you run into something that gives you fits. I always think I'll never forget something I had so much trouble with but I usually do!
