Plug and play... if your router is already set for a connection, XP should grab an IP and fly with it.

I would have had the machine plugged into the router when I installed XP. It will check to see if there's a NIC, install drivers, then test for a connection, and prompt you for any info it needs. Usually none for broadband connects, especially on a router.
Anyhow, like HAL said, just plug it in. If you're not immediately connected, go to Start > Run > and type in: inetwiz Select Connect using my LAN, then Next, Next, No, to mail, Finish. If you're still not connected, post back, and we'll get into the networking wizard. |

OK, just Open Control panel, network connections, and select Set up a home or small office network.
Hit Next a couple of times, and in the Select a connection method screen, select the second option, "This computer ocnnects to the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway." Hit Next. Give it a description, and a name, hit next Change the Workgroup name (added security, as MSHOME is the default). Hit Next a couple of times, and it should all work. |

I used the networking wizard to set mine up in XP. You want to configure it for a gateway. I think you have to bring up the options of the connection and check all the little boxes for stuff like HTTP, TELNET, WHATEVER ELSE. In XP if you use the built in firewall you may have to turn it off.

piasabird, you don't actually set it up as a gateway, you just use that type of connection if running XP on a router. No need to set any check boxes for anything.
If using a router, the XP firewall is redundant and useless, turn it off. |

I set the router up as an Internet Gateway on my network so I can just kill the internet connection with out connecting to the router. But you don't need to do it this way.
