Networking two laptops

I am trying to network together two laptops, both running XP Pro. I have simply connected both via a network cable with RJ45 connectors. The problem is that when I run home networking wizard it keeps saying on both comps that a network cable is unplugged. Do I need a hub for this setup. If not how do I get the connection to work?? Thanks

A crossover cable allows 2 machines to communicate without a hub. You are using a straight through cable which requires a hub. Get a crossover cable and you'll be ok.
