Not able to get internet access on networked computer
I have used the Microsoft Home Networks wizard to network to XP Pro computers. I can access files off both computers but unfortunately I cannot get internet access from the computer not connected to the internet. Can anyone suggest a reason for this. Thanks

You may have to through the internet connection sharing wizard. Sounds like the 2nd machine will get access to the internet through the 1st machine, so the 1st will act as a proxy for the 2nd. Set up ICS and see if this helps.

You said "the computer connected to the internet" so I assume you are using dial up. If that is the case ICS will fix you right up.
If you are connected to the internt via broadband (cable, dsl, etc) you might want to consider installing a router. That way you won't have to have both machines turned on if you want to connect to the internet from the second machine. CH Last edited by Computer Hobbyist; 02-16-2003 at 11:55 AM. |

No the internet connection I have got is through a cable modem. I have tried everything the Microsoft Support Feature suggests. The host computer automatically assigns its IP address and finds the DNS server. I tried setting a static address for the DNS server but then the host would not access the internet so I changed back to automatically assign. Anyone have any other suggestions. Otherwise I might just get a router! Thanks for the replies

I would strongly recommend a router. If you want to use ICS, you need 2 nics in the host machine - or a USB cable modem (not ideal).

Okay looks like a router is the way forward then. at present the cable modem is connected via USB. If I buy a router is it simply a case of connecting both computers straight to the router and then the router to the modem. Will the router be able to automatically assign IP addresses?? Thanks

Yes that is the purpose of routers, to assign IP addresses to devices connected to then.
Make sure that your modem has a ethernet connection in addition to the USB that you are currently using. There are no USB routers being sold in this country at this time. Chas
