Angry Fire Lan stopped working!

Hello,
I have 2 pc's (one is a laptop) connected on a LAN, (Both have XP).
It woked fine for months until it suddnley stopped, with no special reason. I didn't install new hardwere or softwere.
Now heres the wierd stuff:
The LED on the Network Adapter on my Desktop Pc is not on anymore when I connect the cable and turn them on. Both computers have those "A network Cable is unplugged" icon in the tray. I bought a new cable, still nothing.
Tried reinstalling the network adapter, (physically as well), still nothing.
I brought a 3rd laptop (this one had WinME and it worked with my Dekstop PC before I got the new laptop). *NITHER* the desktop pc or the laptop work with the 3rd one.
I'm kinda ran out of things to do.....
if anyone has any ideas.....
Thank You

Are you using a hub/switch or router or are we just talking PC to PC direct here??

Make sure you are using a crossover cable - and try a different NIC in the desktop.

OK, so when this setup did work, you had to have a cross-over cable installed between the 2, for it to stop working as you describe either your crossover cable went bad, got replaced with a straight thru cable, or one of the NIC's went bad. Then I believe one possibility is that the new cable you have bought may not be a crossover cable so you can not get the second laptop to connect either. Step 1 is to make sure you have a good cat5 crossover cable between the PC's and 2 is the check device manager for the status of the network adapter in each to be sure they are working properly....
