Before I network.. I have some questions

ok, this is what i have in mind. Network the following

- My computer
- Downstairs computer
- ps2
- both comptuers sharing the same printer

ok, well I have the router i want.. I have ethernet cards in both pcs, but i have some questions. What type of cabling will I need to pipe all the way downstairs through the walls. Cat 5? Im very new to networking so what cable would be the best for that?

Also, I was trying to setup the router on thsi comptuer before I did anything else. I typed in the ip address in my browser like the directions said. A connect dialog box came up and It told me to type "admin" and leave no apssword for now. Then It takes ou to teh "home" screen. I click run wizard and a new window pops up. But nothing in that window loads. Is that MY comptuer causing the problem or whats wrong here? I tried it several times without being sucessful. Like is this setup wizard trying to configure me a new ip address? Could someone tell me what this is accomplishing by me doing this?

So does the IP address I got when setting up Cox High Speed Internet change when I install this router? thanks a lot!

no the ip address does not change, you do not need to run the wizard at all

you were in the right section on your browser.

you should not change any settings , the default settings should work just fine

do it this way, turn everything off

power up the modem

when it connects then power up the router

when it gets link

turn on computer 1

turn on computer 2

all should be working fine
both computers should be able to connect to the internet now.

have something shared on each puter so they will see each other.

what I use is I create a folder and name it copy and share it on all puters on my network

Since you are using a router you need a straight thru cat 5 cable. Going between floors can be bit of problem. Are you using a interior or exterior wall to go down with. Interior are usually easier as they don't normally have insulation.

Ok, well the way our house is made we have to wire it like this. Wrire from the router goes out throw my room throught the wall up to the attic. Then it goes accross teh attic and comes down through the basement and we wire it up trhough the floor to the downstairs computer in the living room.... Its a lot but I think its the only possible way to wire it.. tid be near impossible to feed it trhough the walls in the house to downstairs...

I see what you're saying but how come this happened. Like the router would light up the cable modem lights would light up properly... but my internet explorer would only access that one address it told me to type in? like if I tried any other site it wouldnt connect... AIm wouldnt connect either... what did I do wrong here? thanks!

You could go wireless for sake of convenience, but if you can pull the wire it is cheaper, faster and more secure.

I am a little confused, you don't seem to have the cable run but you are already setting up your router. Hard for the computer down stairs to talk to the router until its hooked up. About all you should be able to do now is find the internet on the computer that is already set up.

Does your system access the internet when it is connected straight to the modem. If not you will have to call Cox Cable and give them info on your modem, usually the MAC address that is on a sticker on your modem. That is how they grant your access to the internet.
If you can connect to the internet, then run a CAT5 cable from the modem to the WAN port on the Router. Next connect another CAT5 from the router LAN port to the NIC in your computer.
I can only assume that your network settings are correct if you are able to see the router. Hope that helps.

No right now I was jsut watning to play my ps2 online, and share the the connection with the computer at the same time. And when I get the cable Im going to connect the downstairs pc as well. As for right now its just my computer and my ps2...
