It Won't Load

I downloaded a driver from the I'net for an Aztech Modem with Lucent chipset, model no MDP7800U.
Put it in my downloads file, Unzipped it, copied it to a diskette, and shoved it into the A: drive of the system i'm putting it in.
But no matter how hard i try, The new hardware wizard will not find the drivers on the diskette. I even drag and dropped all the files into C:\ Windows\ system, where all the other drivers are. But everytime i browse to a specific location to find the drivers, i keep getting:
Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device.
If you do not want to install a driver now, click Next.
To search again, click Back.
I went right to the source...Aztech.com and found the exact driver for my modem. No homemade job... What am i doing wrong? Never had this much trouble loading a driver before!

Run the ltremove.exe file you have in the unzipped driver package. This will remove the old drivers which you must do before trying to install new ones.

Then download these drivers:

http://www.agere.com/support/client/modem_driver2.html

Copy the file to a floppy, take it to the computer, copy it onto the hard drive, and run it. It's a self-installer, not .inf files to go with the add hardware wizard as the Aztech drivers are.

These are the latest generic Agere (Lucent) drivers for all V.90 Lucent/LT Winmodems. That's one reason the only Winmodems I will deal with without complaining are Lucents - universal driver works fine.

NOTE that WinXP should have native Lucent winmodem drivers - and updates are available through Windows Update. Although the Agere page does not mention that this driver I'm pointing you to supports XP, I get the impression from Richard's Modemsite that it will in fact work.
