Question Modem

What's better a V.90 or V.92 modem? What's the difference? I'm not willing to spend a lot for one so does anypne know a decent dial-up modem that is pretty cheap?

The only thing "decent" and "cheap" (that's an oxymoron) might be a Lucent based winmodem.

If $40 is cheap enough, you can't beat a US Robotics 2977. Otherwise get a Lucent like Jim said. V.92 only benefits you if your ISP supports it, which most don't.

How bout a creative modem. Your saying I have to get a V.90 modem? Most of the ones on newegg are V.92, and they don't have Lucent. I guess $40 is ok though.

You don't *have* to get a V.90 modem - a V.92 will work fine with anyone. The only decent Creative modems are the external serials, all their internals are winmodems and use somewhat proprietary chipsets.

None of the modems at Newegg any cheaper than the USR 2977 impress me in the least - the 2977 is a true hardware controlled modem.
