Dial-up connected, PC restarts.
When dial-up gets connected, the pc restarts ! What can be wrong ? Other than this, PC is running well.
PC is a Pentium 200MMX shuttle 440LX mobo running on Win2K. Modem is a ISA PCTel HSF56. Tried with a old Merz566 external and no problem. Has the PCTel modem gone bad ? Your advice appreciated. |

Are the modem resources conflicting with anything else in the system?

A 200 MMX is very borderline with a software controlled modem, especially a cheap one like a PCTel. I'd use an external serial or a *hardware* controlled ISA modem.

No, no conflicts. I didn't know the PCTel is a soft modem. I thought all ISA modems are hardware modems.
Well, I'm using the Merz566 now. Funny thing is that connected speed always shows 115Kbps. I presume this is incorrect as all my other 56K or V90 modems on various PCs in my house shows between 47Kbps and 52Kbps. It also tends to disconnect rather frequent. (between 30 to 45mins) Maybe some additional init strings is needed ? Or could it also be a sign that this modem is getting bad ? |

Its reporting port speed, not modem speed. You either need a correct driver or a string modifier - and the string modifier (which goes in the Extra Settings box) depends on what chipset it has. Run diags on the modem and post the ATI responses here so we can see what it is.
Oh yes - there are plenty of ISA soft (win) modems out there. HSF, HCF, HSP - those are all softmodems - the H stands for Host. |

Thats a decent Rockwell/Conexant chip - the extra setting to get modem speed instead of port speed is:
S95=1 If that doesn't work, use: W2 However, try this driver first: http://www.askey.com/drivers/staff/96-C807253.zip Last edited by glc; 03-11-2003 at 11:43 AM. |

Thanks glc. Will try that later. In the meantime, I'm having a mini crisis - I mess up the PC that my wifey uses last night and I'm desperately trying to restore her mails

Hi glc, the driver suggested didn't do better. Connection was still dropping after 15 to 30mins. Tried the extra init strings setting but did not see connection speed. Only port speed.
Thanks anyway for your help |
