Internet Connection Sharing
Im trying to get my PC to share a connection with an ethernet card so that I can hook up my PS2. Some of you may have read my previous post, but I think this is the appropriate forum. Here is my other problem, pasted from my previous post:
I open my 1st LAN connection (the one operating on the wireless network card)hit Properties, click the sharing tab and click "enable internet sharing and get the following pop up: "When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP address xxx.xxx.x.x. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, you should set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you would like to enable Internet Connection Sharing" when i click 'Yes' "An Error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing." This doesnt make any sense to me as I dont have any past experiences with IP configuration and networking. Can anyone make any sense of this and let me know how to let me share internet with my LAN card?" --I checked Microsoft.com and tried to resolve it that way, but the terminology they use is vastly beyond my understanding.. Any help with this is appreciated.. Nick |

Windows 2000
I have one Linksys Wireless Network Card (WEP11) i think. The other is just a 100/1000Mbps Ethernet card. Anything else you need to know from me? Nick oh yeah, the computer that is downstairs (equipped with Netgear Router, Net Gear access point, plain ethernet card, and is physically connected to the cable modem) is running Windows XP Edit: ACK! I just found this, is this wat is happening to me? http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...t/mixednet.htm Last edited by NickLuto; 03-25-2003 at 10:21 PM. |

You can't use ICS *and* a router - one or the other!
Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the router, plug the downstairs machine and the wireless access point into regular switch ports on the router, and let the router handle sharing and IP assignments. |

I have this router. (actually the number on mine is RT314 but i didnt see that on the web site...
all mine has on the back is a place to put the D/C powercord, a WAN socket to put the Cable Modem, and 4 ethernet sockets marked 'Local' on it. I dont think mine is capable of being a switch. Is there something else i can buy to act as the switch? Sorry, sorta confused, but thanks for the info glc, im starting to get the idea.. Nick Oh: Basicly im trying to get my computer upstairs (linked by the access point communicating with my WEP11 Wireless NIC) to somehow connect to my PS2 so i can play online..is this possible? or will i have to figure something else out? So ive got the wireless card, and i just put in a regular $10 ethernet card and ran an ethernet cable to the PS2...... is it possible to get the PS2 connected? The 4 "local" sockets are switch ports.
The PS2 has to communicate directly with the router somehow, the only affordable way is drop a cable from the PS2 to the router and if you are going to do that, you might as well drop 2 cables and get rid of the wireless setup. |

Doh! Thanks a bunch glc. You're probably right, the access point and router are going to be useless in about 3 months anyway when i move out for college
