Is Combo Modem/Network Card Better For Laptop

I just got a Dell Lattitude cpi 366mhz for a friend who is new to computers. And I don't use laptops either. The laptop did not come with a modem and it has a network card inside the docking station but not on the laptop itself. As he wants to go to internet cafes, I'm thinking that it might be better to get a combination modem network card like the Xircom rather than dragging his docking station along. I'm thinking that some cafes are on wireless and some places still have some type of network dsl or cable connection tp plug into but I'm not sure about that. Would such a combination modem/network card be better or would he just need a separate wireless modem for Internet cafes?

As long as the combo card gets good reviews I don't see anything wrong with them. Seven years ago when I had to install those Xircom combo cards on 95, it was always a hassle. Nowadays I would think it would be easier but you have the kind of system I used to install those on.

Not sure I've seen wireless NIC that combo's with dial up modem or standard ethernet NIC though. It sounds like he may encounter the need for all 3 so I think you will be looking at at least 2 peices of hardware. A wireless NIC and a ethernet NIC combo modem card. If I'm wrong on this one then sorry, I just havn't seen wireless PC cards that have anything else on them. I have an older XIRCOM combo card that has the ethernet and modem though and it has worked well. Ive even used both LAN and dial up simultaneously with that XIRCOM card...

My Dell has a combo NIC and modem in it. I use a wireless PC card for wireless use. Some of the Dell's have two slots so you can have both installed at the same time (mini PCI). I haven't seen one that has all three functions on the same card, mini PCI or PC slot variety.
