hub network with internet
hey all, I currently use a system where my cable modem runs to a hub then the hub to 3 different comps, when I try to set up a network (with XP) I get a msg that I dont have permission to access the other comps on the netwok. I have come to the conclustion that since I use a hub and no gateway that my 3 comps all have different IPs and therefore are blocked from each other by windows built in firewall. so I was wondering if it was possible for me to set up a network using UDP or IPX protocals and run it at the same time and on the same hub as the internet connection, I know that it would be much easier for me to get a router and use a TCP network but Im tryin to do this for free. anyone with any advice plz tell me how to set up for IPX or UDP

This may not be a protocol issue - it may just be a permissions issue - but if you are not using a router, it's safer to use NetBeui to share files. Here are instructions for installing NetBeui on XP:

most of the time you have to pay for the extra ip address from the ISP to get all 3 computers onlines. I think before I got a router I was paying $5 for an extra IP address.
