Comcast is evil!

They're charging $59.95 per month of cable. The IP won't be static anymore (My IP has been the same with AT&T for over 6 months) with Comcast Heck, I haven't even made the transition to Comcast yet (still using AT&T email and stuff) and I'm being charged $60 a month! What crap!

Anyone know of a good ISP in this area? No SBC please... they're evil too As long as it's under $50/month I'm happy.

I use Comcast and you are right they do not promise a static IP address, however My IP address has not changed for months, even if I turn off my PC and modem and leave for a few days, comes back connect and I get my IP back.

Comcast seems to use the Mac address on your NIC read by your modem to assign IPs, I have experiemented with 3 computers,
Make PC 1 work on line get a certain IP address, have to power cycle the modem for 5 minutes before I can make PC 2 work when connected directly to the modem, gets a new IP, same with PC 3.
but then I have wrote down all 3 IPs, If I break my network down, and connect any of the PC's directly to the modem that is the IP I always get back.

I was an @home customer before comcast brought them. the change over was pretty smooth in mycase. One time they lost my Modems Mac address and had to register it.

If you have been happy with At&T cable, you may want to give Comcast a try at least for a month. In my case, i was connected to the same servers, same local equipment.

MAC addresses is the unique alphanumeric string embedded on an ethernet port that provides the indentity of that port to a network.

Your IP address may or may not expire, it is entirely dependant upon the network administrator and how he has set up his IP address expiration dates. some set them to kick every X amount of time, the most common is 72 hours and usually in the middle of the night others set them to be reassigned if the modem/router is rebooted.

I just dropped Comcast myself. It wasn't so much that I didn't like their product, it was that I couldn't justify spending $100 per month for cable and internet access. With summer comming, I wont be on line much at all. Besides you dont need 1.9MBS speed to browse the Mech. I went for Juno dial up $ 9.95, Im not used to the ssslllooooooww speed of dial up though.
