Wireless Networking - Will this work?

I'm getting a laptop in the near future, so I'll need to integrate a wireless network while still maintaining a webserver.

Imagine this situation: My modem is conencted to my computer, then relayed to the wireless router (through a second NIC), and then the wireless router would just act as it would if it were conencted to the modem. Would this work?

To summarize...

Internet - Modem - Desktop - Wireless Router - Computers in my house

Are you using dial up or broadband? If you're using broadband then the setup should be Internet - Modem - Router - Desktop - Router to Other Computers. Sharing a dial up really isn't recommended.

I am using broadband.

I'm thinking of having it like this: Cable modem connected to NIC1 on desktop. NIC2 on desktop is connected to the wireless router. The wireless router will obviously take any other wireless computers.

Will this be possible?

And is this a good router? It's only $2 more than the one without the ethernet ports, with free shipping, so it's actually $4 less.

Be sure to set up security as well. Otherwise anyone getting close enough could access your lan.
Enable the wireless mac filter to except only your wireless nics.

the way it's supposed to be done is...
modem-router-desktop (all with wires)
the get a wireless nic for the laptop and it can connect to the internet and your desktop through the router.
but if you really want to you should be able to connect it the way you want to, although it would be easier the other way.

there are potentially dozens of ways to set up your network, so are you looking for the cheapest way, the best way, or the "technically correct" way.
i would say the way i recommend above is the best and technically correct way of doing it.. but there are cheaper options.

Not too sure why you would want to use 2 NIC's. You should connect the modem to the Router, and any wired or wireless PC's to the Router. To do it the way you're thinking would require ICS on the desktop to use your notebook. Kinda redundant when you will have everything necessary to connect directly to the Internet via the router.

Single nic, modem direct to router, PC to router. Forward the appropriate ports in the router to the PC for your webserver. That's an excellent router. ICS with 2 nics won't work right, you can only have one DHCP server running on a lan, both a router and ICS are DHCP servers, therefore redundant.

Is this laptop any good? It says there's a integrated wireless networking card in it.

The last time I sold HP notebooks, they burned me - so I would say no. Maybe the model was just a lemon, but burned once - I won't let it burn me again. I'd personally use a notebook with no integrated wireless and get the same brand wireless card as the access point, setting up security is a LOT easier that way although interoperability is supposed to be there.

What notebook would you reccomend? I'll probably use it for surfing and homework, occasional graphics work and gaming. Nothing extremely heavy on the system.

Anything like that for around $1400?
