cable modem keeps quitting on me

I recently re-installed windows 98se. I also re-installed the drivers for my linksys cable modem. Since then, I have been having so much trouble with it. It has been good for the past few days, but now that I tried to use Kazaa to d/l with, it will work for about 10-30min then freak out. If I try to open a website, it says "connection closed by remote server" or just won't say anything. Kazaa will still be d/ling but eventually slows to a stop. If I restart the computer it will work fine. Any suggestion? Thanks.

check your system resources out.
control panel, system, then the preformance tab.
(since you have Kaza installed, you most likely have other like programs that you don't know about running in the background lowering your system resources)

Also is that modem on USB or ethernet?

System resources are 46% free. The modem is connected via USB. Would it be wise for me to get a cheap NIC card?

one, system resources are too LOW, that is what is killing your USB connection.

System resources should be close to 80 or higher. They are lowered by programs you have running, and like I said with Kazaa on the system I am sure you have stuff running you don't know about. Low system resources would also affect an ethernet connection maybe not as much but would still cause problems.

If the modem has a port for ethernet. Yes by all means go ethernet.

I don't want to tell you what brand to get but get at least a 10/100 PCI and not a Generic.

Some good brands in my opinion, Linksys and Netgear.

Thanks for the help. I closed a few programs in the systray and am at 69% free. Also, I am running the Kazaa "lite" version without the adware. And one more silly question, how do I get to the startup manager to disable the programs from starting?

I found this useful site for help determining which programs aren't necessary:

In win 98
Start Run type in 'msconfig'

be very careful, if you get any strange errors, just re enable all programs and start again, some programs I have seen cause problems when disabled. NEWDOTNET is one.

Thanks alot for the help with the background programs. I'm at 86% free now and my d/ls last night were amazing. But unfortunately, my cable is still going on and off. I have to unplug the modem and plug it in again, then wait about 15mins and it might work. Any more ideas?

Get a NIC and take that thing off USB. Even a $10 no name NIC will work better.

Is the power cable firmly plugged into the back of the cable modem? The reason I ask is that I had being experiencing some intermitant internet connection, but I assumed it was the cable company because the dropped connection was happening at the time the cable company had stated that they were doing maintenance, the next day and still no connection. I finally looked at the wires in the back and the power cable was in but not firmly seated in the cable modem (I had just rearranged my office) and guess I didn't plug it in good enough.

I would have to add to the "get a NIC" chorus, pci NICs are dirt cheap $15 (Can.) for a SMC 10/100 pci card. That and you free up a USB port.
