Does a firewall slow internet connection?

So does it? I found out that Iwhen I turned the firewall off, I got and increase in 3,000B/s. I am not sure this numbers reflect the firewall usage

Yup, firewall does affect speed. But unless you are really anal, 3kilobytes per second cannot be humanly detected.

Well my DSL has a speed around 25, 000B/s. One day after tidying the wires, I got a 35,000B/s. Well my P2P program is slow, want more speed...
Thats where I got the numbers

P2P is going to depend on the other side more then your side.

you are downloading. they are uploading.

most boardband connections give more download then upload.

Not to mention where your wires run can have an impact on the data speeds. Most people don't take EMI into account when wiring up a home LAN.

What is EMI?I noticed that cluttered wires affect the speed

EMI = electro-magnetic interference

Also do not run cat5 near a fluorescent light. Try to not have cats near each other, and if they must cross, do so at right angles. If one has cat6, run it anywhere you please.

I have both EMI and RFI here. Crossing cat5 cables on a 90 degrees is what you mean, correct?

I agree with the flourescent light. The other part; I do work for a international company with a large office here in Louisville that has probably 400 CAT5 cables per floor running parallel as well as crossing at all angles. They have 13 floors, so we are talking about over 5000 CAT5 cables crossing at all angels without any problems.

Well, there ya go.
I try to keep them away from each other save for where it would cause building renovation...
And yes I meant 90 degrees.
Oh yeah, do not crimp/kink the cable anywhere save for at the connectors.....
If one has emi and rfi (pretty much the same thing) one should look into cat6, good stuff, that.
Also, depending on wether the firewalling is done in kernel or not, will determine how fast it is. Kernel being most efficient.
In xp, this (kernel) would be port rules under Tcp/Ip filtering. Drill down in networking till you find it. Regardless, I doubt you would see a speed diff, with or without a firewall.
