Networking 2 computers
Hi, I'm trying to networck 2 computers together for gaming and so far it hasn't worked. One computer is a Dell w/ a generic integrated network adapter, and the other is an old gateway w/ an M-130 network adapter (I think). The Dell is running windows ME and the gateway is running windows XP. So far this hasn't worked; I think the cable I was using was a patch cable so I haver to buy a crossover cable.
Before I do though, can anyone tell me if it will work, or is there a cheaper (or free) alternative? |

Get a crossover cable as it will be the cheapest way to network the computers.

Yep you need a X-over cable, not a patch.
This is the cheapest way to go, but there are now USB and Wireless solutions, but wireless may be a bit slow for gaming.

For very little expense they do sell crossover adapters that just plug right onto 1 end of your existing cat 5 that sounds like U already have betwen the 2 PCs, and it puts the needed crossover in there...

The computers are in the same room so I could manage a 10' X-over cable. Its almost not worth it even for $10, though. The gateway I'm networking is 6 years old. I had to cut up the M-130 to make it fit (just the metal clip part).

If it isn't worth the price of the cable, why are you asking?

Careful! Let's not discourage questions. That's what this site is about. There are NO dumb questions....only dumb answers.

If it's not worth the price of the least expensive option, then he's just wasting everyone's time!

Chill out john, he's right. If you think it's a waste of time, then say nothing. |
