aaahhhh! ok, i feel better. i cannot remember how to set an static ip address in the protocol.ini in a DOS boot disk. if someone has this handy it would be great. i remember it looking something like:

[tcpip]
address = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
subnet = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
gateway = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

actually, that might be it. i should try that.
