XP ME network problems

I'm trying to network a windows XP computer with a windows ME computer but, so far it has not worked. The XP system is using a Microsoft mn-130 pci network adapter and the ME system is using a 3com network adapter. I've linked them directly with a cat 5e crossover cable, but I don't know how to network them.

Both computers have a different network utility, and they don't seem to work together. Can anyone tell me how to network these, or give me a link for a guide?

Thanks in advance for any help.

On the WinME computer install netbeui by going to network neighborhood>properties>install>protocol and choose netbeui if it's not already installed.. On the XP PC U have to get netbeui off the cdrom and intall it, then just make the workgroup name the same on both PC's and make sure printer and file sharing and client for Microsoft Networks is also installed on both, it probably will already be.. Enable printer and file sharing, then U still have to at least pick a folder on 1 of the PC's and enable it to be shared. This is all done thru Network Neighborhood>properties except the actual enabling of a folder or a drive or a printer to be shared, that U do by right clicking on the folder, drive or printer and choose sharing from the pop up menu. I know this may be a little too vague but should point U in the right direction, use your windows help for step by step detail of how to do each step needed....

I installed netbeui on the ME computer, but I'm not sure if I found the right file on the XP cd. It's called nbf.sys, and it's in a folder called netbeui. With it are some notepad instructions ssay to put the file into %systemroot%/system32/drivers/ directory. Then it said to put the info file into
%SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory.

I explored windows and the system32 folder contained a drivers folder but no INF folder. I explored some more and found a folder in windows called LastGood, which contained a drivers folder and an INF folder. Which folder do the files go into.

Thanlks for the help.

Actually on the winxp machine go thru Network Places>LocalAreaNetwork>properties>install>protocol and have the cdrom in there to point the install to it for netbeui. Once U get netbeui on the winxp machine and just name the workgroups the same then it just a matter of enabling sharing on whatever, folders, drives , or printers U want...

If you want to use the networking wizard, run it on the XP machine, not the ME machine.
