cannot see eachother's comps

Hi,

I networked two computers with a crossover cable and I plugged the cable modem into one and used ICS to use internet on both computers. The internet works fine, but I can't even see my own comp in network places (on comp is XP, wich is the ICS host, and 98SE on the other one)

any ideas?

Install NETBEUI protocol on both systems, and you'll be browsing in an instant. It won't affect your Internet at all, but it'll solve the browsing issues with XP in workgroup LANs. The NETBEUI protocol is buried in the VALUEADD directory on the XP CD.

be sure to unbind everything thats not necc cause windows leaves everything bound = insecure.

your workgroup name is exact?
your file and printer share is checked?

yea the workgroup name is the same and file and printer is shared. I'll try the NETBEUI thing when I'll find my winxp cd. Thanks guys!

If you don't want to get them from the CD, here's a direct download of the NETBEUI for XP files in ZIP format. It even comes with a little batch file to copy them to the correct locations. After installing the files, open Network Properties and add a protocol, NETBEUI will be one of the choices. It requires no configuration, so it's easy to setup.

Thanks guys I will try that but first i've got some problems. Everything was working fine but now the other comp (not the host the client) can't open web pages by their host names. If I type the ip it's ok msn works it's only a dns problem I don't know any idea ???

You would really be better off spending $50 for a router instead of using ICS if you are on broadband.

it's only for a few days so it's not that important but.. I got a few friends with routers and all their experience with it was terrible. maybe they can't use it or configure it like it should but to my eyes it's only a big trouble more than anything else. I would probably buy a switch ... but ICS is getting me mad too hehe will think about it.. anything to change my mind about routers?

With a router you only need one IP address from your ISP. The router in turn assigns IP addresses to each connected PC. A switch requires a IP address for each PC connected to it. If your ISP charges for additional IP addresses then a router makes sense.

Home networks are no harder to set up using a router than a switch. They both perform the same function.

I knew about the ip thing that's why I would still have to use ICS but it's getting me mad Is there any router with built-in switches or they are all like hubs and split the speed between the ports?
Also, I think my friend's routers got the firewall with it... and they get pretty strange problems like can't send files over msn even if the udp ports are forwarded to the right comp... things like that.

You will have the same issue with MSN with ICS except on the host computer.

Routers have switch ports, nobody makes them with simple hub ports.
