ICS and IP address

Forgive my lack of knowledege when asking this question:
I have a host computer whose IP address is 192.1.1.1 and which is an address that is not changed without concern. The Internet Connection Sharing wizard in Win98 SE says it will set the IP address of the Connection Sharing computer to 192.168.0.1 and that other computers on the local network can be set statically to any IP address in the range from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.253. Does this mean that I cannot access that host computer through my second NIC? Can I force an address that will work?
I have been using a dial-up modem to access the internet and a virtual connection (NIC) via terminal emulation software for accessing the host. This has worked great until DSL. Now I need a NIC for DSL and the present setup does not recognize 192.1.1.1. I was advised to get another NIC. How do I set this darn thing up. Anybody?

If you must keep 192.1.1.1 you will have to use something else besides 98se ICS to share. ICS does not like static IP's at ALL, especially outside of the 192.168.0.x subnet. Winroute Pro is probably the best solution, but its quite expensive.

I think you needs another NIC on the one with 192.1.1.1 , bind ICS to the new NIC. leave the old NIC alone. So in effect the second pc will access internet thru the first one. Install ICS will be no problem.

I don't know exactly how I was able to make it work yet - it's not perfectly clear to me now. I'm going to perform the same operation on another PC in a few days, after I get my thoughts together, and then I'll be able to understand it fully.
It seems that after a few "trial-and-error" exercises, I was able to tweak everything with a combo of TCP/IP and NetBEUI.
Everything is working smoothly now.
