It works, I did it myself last night:

I actually picked up a nice bit of performance by upgrading, I guess the router was crippled quite a bit by running in 'modem' mode. My latency improved by 40 to 60ms and my throughput is up as well.
Not too bad for an hour's work of firmware upgrade.
