Unable to create a dial up connection

I just setup a computer for a friend of mine. When I loaded his win2k disk, there was no modem installed in the computer. It was installed after the os along with the driver. The modem shows up in device manager and is correctly installed.

He just called me and is unable to create a dialup connection; we tried with me telling him how over the phone. I am wondering if dialup networking was not installed due to the fact that there was no modem installed at the time of the os being installed? Does that make sense to anyone?

Hello CRJDRIVER,

Does he see "My Network Places" on his desktop? If he does, tell him to right click on "Properties". There you will see an icon that says "Make New Connection", tell him to double click on that and put a dot on "Dial up to the internet" and then tell him to click "Next". Windows then will ask information on your ISP like your access number, user name, etc.

Make sure his modem is properly installed.

I'm not quite sure if DUN even exists with WIN2K/WINXP, it might of been replaced with "Network and Dial up Connections" .

I do not even see DUN in the Add/remove section "Add Windows components", so I assume WIN2K does not have DUN as you can simply just use the "Network and Dial up connections" thing.

Hope that helps. I believe DUN was just with WIn 9.X. Somebody correct me if I am wrong on that one.

*When I installed WIN2K, I did not see DUN anywhere. I only have that wizard.

I found the problem [I think anyway] TCP/IP was not installed in the initial installation. It took 40 min on the phone to find this out. I think installing TCP/IP is beyond him so I will do it in the morning for him. After TCP/IP is installed he should be able to create a dial up connection.
You are right there is no dun in win2k.

Start - Run - INETWIZ should take care of it.

Fixed it. TCP/IP was not installed due to no modem or nic when I did the install. It is working now.

Thanks
