Router issue
This is a past Router issue that has been going on. Just decided to start a new thread.
What is happening is that the router or the DSL connection loses the connection and I have to reboot the router to restart the connection. When the connection is lost, in the LINKSYS router setup, it says "connecting" for the modem. I have shut down the router and the DSL modem for 5 minutes and turned them back on. That seemed to work the best and didn't get a disconnect for weeks until now. Here are the lights on the DSL modem and on the router when this happens. DSL MODEM: Actvitiy: Solid Green Link: Solid Green Ready: Solid Green Power: Solid Green Router Port 1: Link/Act: Solid Green Full/Col: Solid Green 100:Solid Orange WAN: Link: Solid Green Act: None Diag: None *Port 2 is the same. I have updated the Router firmware. *This is the problem that GLC and BYTE helped me on, and just wanted to update them on the issue by starting a new thread for more attention and further help. Thank you. |

Which DSL modem do you have? How often does the connection get Lost?
Do you get disconnected if you have the modem direct to one PC with out the router? |

The DSL modem is a Westell DSL modem.
Well, it's been a week since the connection been lost. I havent tried one PC. But I remember, before I had a LAN, I would never get a lost connection until I went on a LAN with the LINKSYS Router. |

On that first page of the routers config, which is the setup page, down at the bottom, do U have "keep alive" checked or "connect on demand"

Have U ruled out the obvious like the cable from the router to the DSL modem. U would be seeing that link light go out though if it were the cable. Shouldn't that activity light blink, and then only when there is data transfer activity. My 3 lights on my westell are always solid green but the activity light is amber and flashes during data transfer activity and I have never seen it solid on, even during downloads it still is flashing...

When I am downloading, talking on AIM, or browsing the web, the activitiy light on my modem blinks.
I am going to replace the cable between the modem and the router. Activitiy light on Router is also blinkin when activity happens. |

Matt:
I'm referring to your original POST where you state that during the disconnects the activity light is solid green... That I do believe would certainly indicate a problem and would sound to me like a verizon problem. In your router on the first page that comes up which is the setup page I assume you are set correctly under wan connection type>> 'PPPOE' < Kevin Last edited by ktkendall; 07-26-2003 at 06:42 AM. |

Yes, the problem started to happen once I got a LAN. But LINKSYS are reliable routers and I know many people that have the same router as me and they dont get this problem. I think it is the cable between the router and the DSL modem. One end clips in just fine and the other doesn't clip in at all, so it isn't very secured in.

Oh My yes, if that little clip that snaps the rj45 in there is broken then scrap that cable or if U have the means cut that end off and crimp a new rj45 plug onto the end of it. If this is the problem U should be seeing the network link light on the DSL modem go dark, and the wan port link light on the router go dark as well...
