I currently have a hub hooked up to a DSL gateway. Two computers (3 soon) share a 144/144 IDSL line. If both computers access bandwidth at the same time, the ping skyrockets to 600 and higher, instead of 90 when only one computer is accessing bandwidth. Would using a switch prevent the pings from going so high?

I would say yes. I recently purchased a Linksys 4 port router and my ping times have dropped substantially over the used of my 8 port hub.
